Through a collaboration with businesses and the community members it is our goal to assemble a collection of images of Fernwood’s past and present for this exhibition. The exhibit will capture the spirit of Fernwood and be celebrated at the BaxterCannon Gallery at an Opening event, then remaining on display in the gallery,  as well as being posted online on the BaxterCannon website for the entire public to enjoy.
Complimentary portrait sessions will be offered by photographers Chuck Cannon and Laurie Baxter in our studio throughout the month of September. You will receive a complimentary 8x10 photo from your sessions for your participation.   Please consider helping us create this extra special community event.

BaxterCannon’s latest undertaking, Fernwood Then and Now, is a project in which we are examining Fernwood through a historical, as well as a contemporary lens.

Our gallery has been the fortunate recipient of a My Great Neighborhood Grant , courtesy of the City of Victoria, to aid in this endeavor. We are graciously sponsored by the Fernwood Community Association, and we are looking forward to working with our neighbors to create a new show for Fall 2023. Images will include Fernwood’s residents and merchants, as well as our ever changing places and spaces. We believe it is important to capture the spirit of our neighborhood and celebrate it with our fellow Fernwoodians.

The Fernwood Small

As galleries have shuttered during social distancing and stay-at-home orders, the spirit of creativity has informed new relationships between art and viewers – Fernwood Small is one of these undertakings.  The window exhibition at the BaxterCannon Gallery (dubbed The Fernwood Small) is a 24/7 outdoor gallery that creates a socially distant art experience for those who are reluctant to set foot in a gallery and affords the opportunity to view contemporary photography safely and with a coffee in hand.

Congratulations to all of our winners: Don Craig, Austin Dennys, Thomas Guerrero, Shawnie Kelly, Shelby La Rose, Cheryl Mullen, Ryan Pederson, Annie Roslee, Rachel Seeley, Kate Shelton, Alex Skorochid, Derek Swallow & Reteka Yuvaraj.

We asked our creative community for photographic representations of our neighbourhood and Fernwoodians rose to the challenge. We feel these images speak to Fernwood’s longevity, resilience and vibrant spirit. BaxterCannon wishes to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the FCA and the City of Victoria for all of their support.

Past Events

2022 Fernwood Art Stroll

June 11th & 12th of 2022 was a bustling, fun-filled weekend for BaxterCannon Gallery. Both photographers were honored to be part of Fernwood’s 14th annual Art Stroll https://www.fernwoodartstroll.ca/ Over 400 visitors (including some four legged furry ones), passed through our door. Many copies of our latest book, Cuba is it’s People, were sold and all proceeds were donated to the Friends of Cuba. The organization works tirelessly to end the blockades and inequality against Cuba.

On Halloween of 2020, BaxterCannon Gallery hosted a fundraiser for the SPCA’s Pet Food Bank in Fernwood Square. Faced with the challenge of hosting a safe event that still helped build community during the COVID-19 pandemic, we offered pet portraits in an open-air photo booth and raised money for pets and their guardians in need.

Current Show

Western Ritual

On exhibit now is Western Ritual, a documentary series featuring a day in the lives of modern day cowboys in Wyoming. Livestock freely wander 100,000 acres of land; however, the age old tradition of branding still exists in these parts of the country. For some viewers this springtime ritual will be a familiar way of life, for others, an eye opening experience. Artists Charles Cannon and Laurie Rae Baxter capture the wild west experience in color, B&W and with the aid of a drone. We invite you to come and learn about this vanishing way of life.
